I have no clue as to why it is considered even the least bit masculine to know so much about so many other grown men. Living vicariously through other men, who are chasing around a ball, to me, seems pretty homoerotic, at the very least. Just because you played football in high-school, and never got anywhere with it, you must fulfill all of your squandered dreams by 'playing' in a fantasy league, living vicariously through other adults, who did get somewhere with their ability to play a game.

Obviously there are semantic differences, but the point of the topic is that most Jocks tend to think they are somehow better than the Nerds that play Dungeons and Dragons and such, yet they play Fantasy Football....

What a load... I am not playing a coach. I don't do anything a coach would do aside from put players in my lineup, once that is over and game time begins I do nothing. There is no difference between Mark the coach and Mark the human being. I don't have any different mannerisms, dress, languages, gear, etc. As others have pointed out the League Commissioner and the DM are very different. To call Fantasy Football role playing is like saying you are role playing when you go to work, when you go out... There may be some truth to it, but its definitely not the same thing.

I played tons of RPGs like AD&D back when I was in high school, and enjoy fantasy football nowadays.

I'd still play RPGs if I had the time, btw. They're great fun socializing with your friends and stretching your imagination. I think many people who don't have RPG experience think it's only for people who want to pretend to be something else, when that's not it at all. A better description might be scriptwriters sitting in a room, hashing out a shared story together. The writers aren't pretending to be anyone other than themselves; what they are doing is trying to build a story together. When it works, it's great fun all around!

This is not at all similar to what I do while playing FF. Fantasy football's best analogy is Pokemon, or some collectible card game, not an RPG.

All games, sure, but very different in how they play out. :)

You are a stats nerd. For you, you get the same thing out of Fantasy Football and Fantasy Role Playing. There are Fantasy Football players who are not stats nerds ( though I REALLY can't understand that ), and there are Role Players who get off on the role playing part instead of the building up character stats part.

A lot of stats nerds, and others get hung up on the stigma of playing 'D&D' and miss the part of it they would enjoy. For some of us, we like it because some of the REALLY weird people you meet make us feel normal... and of course, once you get over it you realize that most of us are well groomed, responsible, intelligent non-virgins... some of us even have offspring.

I think what I love more than this article is the fantasy football nerds trying to justify in their heads why its different than D&D. Its like they will go to great lengths to cover it up.
