NCSU Violates NCAA Code with John Wall Facebook Group: The Rest of the Nation is Untouched

09 Apr 2009

Earlier today, the News and Observer reported that North Carolina State officials have asked a student to cease and desist a Facebook group called “John Wall PLEASE Come to NC State”. Was a group that pleads its case for the highly touted #1 recruit in the nation actually against NCAA violations? In my opinion, no. As Perez of the Observer points out, the NCAA bylaws read:

“NCAA bylaws go on to state that all in-person, on- and off-campus recruiting contacts, as well as correspondence and telephone calls, with a prospective student-athlete shall be made only by authorized institutional staff members,” the letter said. “With this correspondence, North Carolina State is alerting you to the applicable NCAA legislation. Any current or future recruiting contact, as well as correspondence and/or telephone calls must cease immediately. Should this activity not cease and/or it continues in the future, we will have no choice but to take further action.”

NC State has had a rough couple of weeks, considering the team just 30 minutes down the road happened to take home a NCAA championship. But to make matters worse, before the departure of Calipari to Kentucky the Word of God senior had merely Memphis and NC State on his list. Unless Calipari and World Wide Wes have their way at Kentucky, Wall has up to 6 teams on the block at this moment, including North Carolina and Duke. So Memphis, Baylor, UNC, Duke, Kentucky, and State all would like a piece of the Wall, yet according to NC State, they are all in direct violation of recruiting laws.

The fact is that if you’re a 4 star recruit or above, there are more than likely 5+ pseudo Facebook pages of yourself anyways. As a matter of fact, there are over 500 John Walls on Facebook at this point anyways . . . what are the chances that a State student is going to pick the right one? The administrators at NCSU need to lighten up and allow their students to show some pride in the potential of their basketball program. Because with the way it’s going now, the only positive aspect about NCSU to Lowe’s Wolfpack is the fact he will be the new OJ Mayo of North Carolina. Except in ACC play, being the top-dog on a bottom tier team will only expose every flaw in your skill set.
