27 Sep 2010
A day after 49ers coach Mike Singletary said Jimmy Raye would be the offensive coordinator for the rest of the season, Raye was fired by San Francisco.
Quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson was promoted to lead playcaller. Johnson becomes the 49ers’ eighth offensive coordinator in eight seasons.
Raye’s dismissal was first reported by NFL.com.
The 0-3 49ers, a popular preseason pick to win the NFC West, were routed in Kansas City on Sunday, scoring just 10 points.
The 49ers are currently 20th in total offense, but their 12.7 points-per-game average is 31st in the NFL — better than only the 0-3 Carolina Panthers. San Francisco also has a minus-5 turnover ratio this season.
Raye joined the 49ers in early 2009, replacing Mike Martz, who Singletary fired in his first major act after getting the permanent job running the club.
During more than three decades of NFL coaching experience, Raye has been a coordinator with the Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers,New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs,Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders, where he also was the team’s assistant head coach in 2004-05 under Norv Turner. Raye also spent three seasons as the New York Jets‘ running backs coach under former coach Eric Mangini.
